Ridge Spring, SC resident says police account threatened warrant over Flock camera comment

Christian McClellan says he received Facebook messages from an account labeled Ridge Spring Police Department threatening to seek a warrant for "unlawful communications" and to send U.S. Marshals after he posted a profane comment on the department's post about Flock license plate readers being cut down. According to Ridge Spring's mayor, Police Chief Terry Logan was behind the account when the messages were sent; Logan declined to comment to WRDW. The department's Facebook page was taken down after the exchange and has since been restored.

Why this matters

The episode raises questions about whether agencies operating ALPR networks can be relied on to respect First Amendment limits, and about what recourse residents have when criticism of surveillance technology draws a response from police.
