A wireless detection is a lead, not proof that a specific device is a Flock camera. Whenever possible, verify a suspected location through visual observation, public records, or multiple independent indicators before treating it as confirmed.
Wireless, traffic, trespass, and recording laws vary by jurisdiction. Use passive research tools lawfully and safely. Do not operate scanning equipment or record observations while driving. Use a passenger or set up lawful hands-free logging before you travel.

Detection & research tools
Tools for passive wireless research, maintained by their own developers. Some are fully open-source: free firmware and code you flash onto your own hardware. Several are also sold as ready-made devices by the people who build them, so you can buy a finished tool instead of assembling one. We link to official documentation, source, and the developers' own shops; we host no firmware or binaries, sell nothing here, and earn nothing from these links. Every wireless detection is an indicator to verify, not proof.

What is wardriving?
Wardriving is moving through an area while using wireless equipment to observe nearby Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other radio signals. Network administrators, security researchers, hobbyists, and mapping projects have used it for decades.
For ALPR research, passive wireless scanning can sometimes pick up radio characteristics associated with nearby surveillance equipment. Treat any such detection as a lead. A wireless or hardware-prefix match is not a confirmed Flock camera. Confirm suspected locations visually and through public records or government documentation before you rely on them.
Found a possible camera?
A short field guide for documenting a possible ALPR camera, lawfully and safely.
- Stay in a lawful public location.
- Do not touch or interfere with the equipment.
- Photograph the installation when it is safe and lawful to do so.
- Note the approximate street or intersection, city, state, and GPS coordinates if you have them.
- Note the direction the camera appears to monitor.
- Check DeFlock and other community maps to see if it's already documented.
- Compare the physical characteristics against camera identification guides.
- Treat any wireless detection as supporting evidence, not automatic proof.
- Submit verified information through the appropriate mapping project's process.
- Come back and investigate the agency, contract, policy, approval, officials, and next public meeting.
Questions to ask your government
Once you know which agency operates a camera, these are the questions that matter at a public meeting, in an email, or in a public-record request.

- Who has access to the system?
- How many user accounts exist?
- Are individual accounts required, or can they be shared?
Searches
- Is every search logged?
- Must users enter a case number or reason?
- Who reviews the logs, and how often are audits performed?
Sharing
- Which outside agencies can search local data?
- Can local users search other jurisdictions?
- Can federal agencies access it? Who approves sharing?
Retention
- How long is vehicle data retained?
- Can retention be extended?
- Who can export records?
Accountability
- What happens when an employee misuses the system?
- Has the agency investigated misuse?
- Are findings reported publicly?
Procurement
- Who approved the contract, and how much does it cost?
- When does it renew? Is renewal automatic?
- Was there a public hearing?
