Advocacy group tallies 93 local Flock contract cancellations in August 2026 alone

Secure Justice, an Oakland-based anti-surveillance group, says it has counted 214 cities and counties that have ended Flock Safety contracts since 2021, with 93 of those cancellations recorded in August 2026 — roughly four times the prior month's total, according to an updated tally reported by Ars Technica. The group's executive director, Brian Hofer, said about 165 cancellations occurred in the first eight months of 2026. Flock spokesperson Courtney Terlecki responded that new city partnerships have outpaced nonrenewals by roughly 10 to one so far in 2026, though the company declined to give a specific number of new customers. Flock has said its products are used by more than 5,000 communities.

Why this matters

The tally is one of the few public attempts to quantify how many local governments are walking away from ALPR contracts, and the competing figures from Flock and its critics show how contested the underlying data remains for officials weighing renewals.
