Jerome, Idaho council removes $14,000 for Flock Safety cameras from 2027 budget

The Jerome City Council voted last week to strike $14,000 earmarked for Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras from the city's 2027 budget. Police Chief Duane Rubink said the city has a 2026 Flock contract and that, while no cameras have been installed locally, the department has had access to the ALPR network. Rubink described the technology as a useful investigative tool and said the department will regroup and may ask the council to reconsider next year.

Why this matters

Jerome is one of several Idaho communities revisiting ALPR spending amid questions about data retention and access, and budget votes are one of the clearest levers local councils have over surveillance contracts.
