DeSantis Orders Flock License Plate Cameras Removed From Florida State Highway Right-of-Way

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an order requiring the removal of Flock Safety automated license plate readers from what he described as the state highway system, including interstates such as I-10 and I-75, within 30 days. A Florida Department of Transportation memo states that cameras left in state rights-of-way after the deadline will be removed by the state, and that FDOT will deny future permits for such cameras. Following the order, the sheriff's offices in Franklin, Liberty and Putnam counties said they would end their own license plate reader programs, according to WCTV.

Why this matters

A statewide transportation agency using permitting authority over public rights-of-way is a distinct lever from local council votes or contract cancellations, and could be a template for other states weighing limits on ALPR networks.
