Man filmed sawing down Flock camera in St. Johns County said he worked for Flock and 'NSA'

Action News Jax recorded a man using a handheld electric saw to cut down a Flock Safety license plate reader camera near Durbin Creek and Flora Branch boulevards in Julington Creek on a Tuesday. The man identified himself to the station as Alan Johnson and said he was a county contractor working on behalf of Flock and the "NSA." The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office told the station on Thursday that the individual is a contract employee of Flock and referred further questions to the company. The removal came one day after the Florida Department of Transportation issued a memo revoking all approved permits for ALPR cameras placed in state highway rights-of-way.

Why this matters

The episode illustrates how difficult it can be for the public to tell authorized camera removals from vandalism when ALPR hardware sits in public rights-of-way with limited signage or disclosure about who owns and services it.
