Brenham PD fires officer and requests Texas Rangers probe after ALPR misuse audit

The Brenham Police Department in Texas fired Officer Gabriel Duran on October 16 after an internal affairs investigation, completed October 14, concluded he committed multiple policy violations involving the department's automated license plate reader system. The misuse was flagged by a department employee during a routine audit conducted under a recently strengthened ALPR policy, after which Duran was placed on administrative leave and had his access to department systems revoked. The department also asked the Texas Rangers to conduct a separate criminal investigation into the officer's actions. Chief Gary Boshears said he ordered a comprehensive review of all ALPR searches performed by the department over the prior year.

Why this matters

The case is one of the few instances in which an agency's own audit requirements surfaced suspected license plate reader misuse and led to discipline, offering other communities a test of whether written ALPR safeguards translate into detection and accountability.
