Athens-Clarke County police fire officer after internal probe into Flock ALPR searches

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced in an Oct. 7 news release that Officer Tyler Vaughn was terminated following an internal investigation into his use of the department's Flock Safety automated license plate reader system. According to the department, the investigation found Vaughn searched for an ex-girlfriend's license plate in the Flock system numerous times over the course of a week in 2025. The firing follows a Sept. 28, 2026 town hall in Athens convened by state Rep. Eric Gisler, D-Watkinsville, where law enforcement use of Flock cameras was discussed and Gisler suggested possible state legislation on the surveillance tool.

Why this matters

Personal lookups by officers are among the most commonly cited risks of broad ALPR access, and this case shows such searches can run repeatedly before internal audits catch them. How agencies detect, document and discipline misuse is a benchmark for other communities weighing Flock contracts.
