Ash Grove, Mo. police investigate vandalism of city's only Flock ALPR camera

Ash Grove police reported finding the city's Flock license plate reader camera on Route 160 knocked over with its wiring cut early Monday morning, Aug. 17, 2026. Police Chief Joe Mahan said it appeared a vehicle pushed the camera over from behind, so no images of the incident were captured. The damaged unit was removed to a secured location, and Mahan estimated the loss at a couple thousand dollars. No suspect has been identified; Mahan said whoever is found responsible would face a destruction of property charge.

Why this matters

The case reflects a pattern of ALPR cameras being physically damaged in communities where their use is contested, and the chief's response — inviting residents to raise objections at City Hall rather than damage equipment — highlights the question of what formal channels exist for local input on surveillance deployments.
