Second Habersham County deputy arrested over alleged Flock camera misuse; sheriff tightens access policy

The Habersham County Sheriff's Office in Georgia says deputy Jonathan Thomas was fired and arrested after investigators alleged he accessed license plate reader data for a non-law-enforcement purpose following an incident involving someone with whom he had a personal relationship. Thomas, employed by the agency since December 2024, was charged with violation of oath of office and misuse of license plate data. It is the second such case at the agency in about a month, after another deputy was fired and arrested over alleged misuse of the cameras. Sheriff Robin Krockum said the department is changing how deputies may access the system.

Why this matters

Two alleged misuse cases at a single agency within roughly a month illustrate how automated license plate reader searches can be run for personal reasons unless access controls and audit trails are built in beforehand.
